>Description:
It seems to me that the system has to be up for a day or so
for this to take effect, but the symtom is that reboot or halt will
not reboot or halt. Several times, I have tried taking it to single
user mode, and then unmounting the disks. Unmounting my news spool
hung the system there.

Now when I come back up out of either one of these problems, I
find that there are never any problems --- so the sync is working
(doesn't complain at all abou the disks in fsck), but the actual
unmount (setting the clean bit?) never happens.

Note that if the machine is up a few hours it will normally
reboot. I'm wondering if this may be something that expire does to
the disk, but I have no hard data. I think that I have dump
technology finally mastered if a kernel dump might help you (how do I
trigger one is a good question).

David,

A little over a year ago, you reported a problem with the reboot(8)
command hanging because some disks would not unmount. You reported
the problem as being with NetBSD 1.1 - have you upgraded since,
and if so, does the problem still occurr?

Sadly, while I still run NetBSD on my Sun 4/260 and my Sun
3/260, I have converted by intel box to FreeBSD. This was basically
required for serial performance. Also... I have long since abandoned
the 386 motherboard that I used then --- although if someone wants to
dick around with it (I'm pretty sure it was a function of the
motherboard), I'd be happy to let them.

Dave.

In that case... it has largely dissappeared. I havn't had a
problem with 1.2.1 lately...
