System: NetBSD acheron.in.hades 1.6.2_STABLE NetBSD 1.6.2_STABLE (kern-acheron) #2: Mon Mar 8 02:58:47 EST 2004 mason@acheron.in.hades:/u1/buildspace/kern-acheron i386
Architecture: i386
Machine: i386
>Description:
tar(1) fails to back up large files.

Feeding this file to tar, via 'tar cvp 20040315-0411-0-6-SLASH.gz':

-rw------- 1 root wheel 7266917518 Mar 15 04:45 20040315-0411-0-6-SLASH.gz

Stops rather quickly, and gives me this, via 'tar tv':

-rw------- root/wheel -1323017074 Mar 15 04:45 2004 20040315-0411-0-6-SLASH.gz

>How-To-Repeat:
Try to use tar(1) to store a large file on tape. I have no tracked down the
exact size at which this breaks. Perhaps it's at some power of two. I have
noted failure with a 7,266,917,518 byte file, and success with a slightly
smaller 6,947,739,019 byte file, so it appears not to be a "32-bit" issue.
>Fix:
Unknown as yet. Given that tar(1) handles files with a filesize over 32 bits
cleanly, it's not immediately obvious what's breaking.
