>Description:

I was updating this Pentium (plain old Pentium, not 2/3/4/M)
system to 2.0 from ... something earlier, the kernel was 2.0_BETA but
the userland code may have been older. I booted from a CD written
with the ISO image from the ftp site. (i386cd.iso, as multi-1 doesn't
seem to boot on x86)

During the installation, while the xserver set was being
unpacked, the kernel complained (3 times?) about a "non-media hardware
failure" on cd0. The installation code displayed an error from gzip,
then happily cleared the screen and told me all sets were installed
correctly. Re-trying the read from the CD wouldn't surprise me, but
once gzip got an error, I assume the input data stream was toast...

I can certainly believe the drive might have problems; it's a
CD writer that I've never gotten to write successfully, and I vaguely
recall hearing of problems with the model (HP SureStore 6020).

>How-To-Repeat:
Install with a slightly flaky CD drive?
>Fix:
Monitor i/o and gzip process better for errors.
