System: NetBSD hackworth 3.99.5 NetBSD 3.99.5 (HACKWORTH) #0: Tue May 24 13:32:09 EDT 2005 perry@hackworth:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/HACKWORTH i386
Architecture: i386
Machine: i386
>Description:

Some gnome apps, like ggv and gpdf, use a gnome help viewer to
display help information. Unfortunately, they don't directly
depend on said help viewer, so if you build just the app
without building all the rest of the gnome metapkg, you don't
get help when you click on help in the apps.

>How-To-Repeat:

Build "ggv" or "gpdf" (and probably other apps) without
	building the rest of gnome.

>Fix:

Presumably, the dependency should be made explicit.

Over to gnome maintainer.

State-Changed-Why:
I don't think we should make these (and many other) packages depend on the
GNOME help viewer, AKA Yelp. Its dependency tree is not small, and it will
get bigger if we want to make it work with Gecko instead of gtkhtml.

There are some other possible "solutions": create a GNOME FAQ and place it
on our site, mentioning this and other possible questions that users may have.
OK, this is just an ugly workaround.

Another solution could be to implement a way to let packages "suggest" other
ones that may be useful (as Debian does, for example). A long while ago,
someone implemented this (jschauma@, IIRC), but it wasn't commited for some
reasons I don't remember...

Any preference? Any other possible solution?

On the other hand, if you install a package, you generally have an
expectation that it will work, and that includes the help funciton. I
think it is necessary to add the viewer to the dependencies regardless
 of how large they are.

This was filed thirteen years ago. I no longer use gnome,
so as far as I'm concerned this can be closed, or at the very least
my name can be taken off the problem report.
