errors.

 I'd guess at a hdx/fdx mismatch somewhere.
 And a device driver that is being overly verbose!

 From memory of the 79c970/1 the mac unit needs to be told whether
 the phy has negotiated hxd or fdx (but not 10/100M).
 The definition of the phy registers makes this ~impossible :-)
