>Description:
NetBSD, when booting on a Power Macintosh G3 (Beige/Minitower/OF2.0F1), will boot up to "scsibus0: Waiting 2 seconds for devices to settle" then stop. There are no SCSI devices attached beyond the MESH chip, and the kernel just spins at that point and never advances. Keyboard reset works, so the machine is not hardlocked, but NetBSD is still quite unusable as it stands.
>How-To-Repeat:
Get a Power Macintosh G3 with 2.0F1 OFW, try to boot (CD-ROM Partition 0 or Floppy, both exhibit the issue) and watch it not boot.
>Fix:
Fix not known... at least not by me.

Can you drop into ddb and do a "bt"?

Last time I checked the beige G3 didn't boot at all from CD, I had to
netboot mine to install NetBSD. So, which firmware patches do you
have installed?

RE Michael Lorenz
The Rev. A Beige G3 (Open Firmware 2.0F1) does indeed boot from both
floppy and CD-ROM.
The Rev. B Beige G3 (Open Firmware 2.4) does not boot from either
CD-ROM _or_ floppy.
RE Martin Husemann
If the key combination to enter NetBSD DDB is the same as that to enter
MacsBug (The NMI combo), then no, I can't, it either lacks DDB or is unable
to enter it; all that works is the reset combo.

Pinging for a reply, since I didn't notice I had to manually CC everyone...
I cannot drop into DDB. Entering the combination causes no response,
all that works is the keyboard reset combination.
The Rev. A G3 is capable of booting from a floppy or a CD-ROM, this is
the one with Open Firmware version 2.0F1. The Rev. B G3, however,
(Open Firmware 2.4) seems to be incapable of booting from either.

I can't reproduce the hangup, my beige G3 Just Works(tm), firmware
revision is 2.0f1.
It won't get anywhere without firmware patches though, the easiest way
is to attempt to boot any MacOS X install CD ( 10.3 and newer will
complain but they'll still install the patches ) - after that the
beige G3 should boot NetBSD just fine.

Perhaps it has been rectified since, but I did indeed have the
required patches in the nvramrc; typically firmware-based boot issues
manifest in not being able to boot anything at all, not an issue later
on the sequence. As for whether I can still reproduce it or not, I
will have to doublecheck later.

My beige G3 does hang for a while when detecting devices on the 2nd
IDE channel ( I've got a DVD drive there, it takes about 15 seconds to
show up ). Also, the heathrow-based IDE cells are notoriously
sensitive to less-than-optimal cables, I couldn't get IDE DMA to work
on any device, thought it's a Heathrow-related problem but it turned
out with new cables the thing Just Worked(tm).
