NetBSD maki.4407.kankyo-u.ac.jp 4.99.61 NetBSD 4.99.61 (MAKI) #1: Tue Apr 29 14:54:05 JST 2008 root@maki.4407.kankyo-u.ac.jp:/usr/obj/sys/arch/i386/compile.i386/MAKI i386
>Description:
This is similar to kern/38469. The recent GENERIC kernel does not boot but GENERIC.NOACPI does. The mainboard is ECS PM800-M2 with VIA chipset.
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?DetailID=453&CategoryID=1&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=45&LanID=0
The kernel of 4.99.34 in October 2007 can boot.
I put the trace at http://d4407.kankyo-u.ac.jp/~nakaji/NetBSD/maki/acpitrace.txt
I also put dmesg.boot, kernel configuration, and acpidump's outputs at the same directory.
http://d4407.kankyo-u.ac.jp/~nakaji/NetBSD/maki/
o MAKI : unbootable kernel configuration
o dmesg.boot.12e : dmesg.boot of 4.99.34
o dmesg.boot.12e-noacpi : dmesg.boot of 4.99.61 without ACPI
o pm800-m2-12e.* : acpidump's output on 4.99.34
>How-To-Repeat:
I do not have another NetBSD/i386 using VIA chip and I cannot reproduce the problem on another PC.

Same boot failure occurs on amd64, too. The mainboard is Albatron
K8M800-754 with VIA K8M800 and VT8237 chipset.
GENERIC 4.99.62 fails:

Yes, unfortunately. I tried the latest revision 1.65 of mpacpi.c.
/* $NetBSD: mpacpi.c,v 1.65 2008/06/25 19:57:22 joerg Exp $ */
with this configration.
$ egrep -v '^(#|$)' /usr/src/sys/arch/i386/conf/MAKI
include "arch/i386/conf/GENERIC"
options ACPI_DEBUG
options CONSDEVNAME="\"com\"",CONADDR=0x3f8,CONSPEED=9600,CONS_OVERRIDE
I got the "db{0}> " prompting on my serial console. There is still irq
mismatch.

Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2008 13:39:16 -0500 (CDT)
Hello
My home server was working with 4.99.32 (acpi) without problems.
It is a mini-ITX motherboard MSI MS-7199 VIA C7/CN700/VT8237R+
Last weekend I installed /pub/NetBSD-daily/HEAD/200808270002Z/iso/i386cd.iso
using the option *disable ACPI* of the install CD because it
can not boot in *normal mode*.
4.99.72 works fine except when I try boot it using
normal mode (using ACPI), the machine enters in panic state.
The following dmesg listings are *with* and *without* ACPI.
It is a GENERIC kernel except this two lines:
options RTC_OFFSET=360
options ACPIVERBOSE
I will be glad if you ask me for more tests.
Have a nice day.

State-Changed-From-To: open->analyzed
State-Changed-By: joerg@NetBSD.org
State-Changed-When: Wed, 12 Nov 2008 20:39:53 +0000
State-Changed-Why:
Both this and a similiar machine from jakllsch use ACPI PCI interrupt
devices even when in IO-APIC mode.
This creates the obvios issues as the interrupt handling is only written
for the ISA IRQs, so this needs some work. The panic is also bogus,
as IRQ and line are not necessarily related for IO-APIC mode.

Subject: Re: kern/38540 more feedback: booting with VIA chipsets
Date: Thu, 25 Jun 2009 11:01:19 -0500 (CDT)
Hello
Last week, I upgraded to 5.99.14/i386 in my home server.
It is a mini-ITX motherboard MSI MS-7199 VIA C7/CN700/VT8237R+
This time, the machine boots with ACPI but the network adapter does
not works. Booting with NO ACPI, works fine.
As a reference, check my previous report using 4.99.72/i386
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/netbsd-bugs/2008/09/04/msg005787.html
The folowing two listings are the dmesg booting with ACPI and NO ACPI
I will be glad if you ask me for more tests.
Have a nice day.

A patch that reorders some initialization of the ACPI system is in the works.
These VIA DSDTs have a method that initializes a variable that indicates
what southbridge the DSDT is for, this changes the behavior of many
other methods to be appropriate for the board it's running on.

According to the submitter of PR 45848/45849, which is the same
problem, the problem does not exist in -6 and -current, so I'm
going to conclude that the fix did eventually get committed.
