Grab the 5.0 i386 liveCD from http://www.jibbed.org and try booting. It only boots if both ACPI *and* SMP are disabled, avoiding only one or the other doesn't work, it just hangs before reaching prompt.
>Fix:
No fix, but the workaround is to disable ACPI and SMP, e.g. use boot option #4 (I think), then everything seems to work fine (besides the obvious lack of a second core, heh).
