Can you open /dev/video1 with mplayer or something else?
If its not in dmesg, why do you want to open it at all?
Why don't you use /dev/video0?
I don't really understand you issue, but it doesn't seem to be
VLC specific.

Hi,
I found this bug while google'ing for my problem, I think this is gst
related. I installed a fresh 5.0.2 system (i386) on my laptop and gnome
from pkgsrc and the same error appears with totem on every file (mp3 or
whatever multimedia file) you open.
I haven't found why gst is not using video0 neither a way to configure
this. GStreamer Properties application is rather useless for that.
Hope this helps,
Torsten

Has also been reported here:

As far as I can see with no answer.

ok..solved:
x11/gst-plugins0.10-x11
was missing.
Maybe re-assign to gnome package maintainer and ask him/her to add this as
a dependency? I think most people will need it.
Best regards
Torsten

State-Changed-Why:
Is this still an issue? The situation with gst and video plugins has changed
a lot since 2010. As has VLC.

State-Changed-Why:
Feedback mail bounced (unsurprisingly)
... anyone else have any input? Probably should just close it but
I don't really know what the probability of the fix still being
useful might be.

State-Changed-When: Fri, 12 May 2023 07:55:36 +0000
State-Changed-Why:
As far as I can tell gstreamer is no longer part of vlc's deps chain
so the information in here is no longer useful.
