Install gnome and enable all the deamons, if you start famd from inetd everything will work, if from rc.d as a standalone daemon, the keyboard does not react, only mouse runs.

 I have found one more thing, if I start famd from inetd, the keyboard 
 works until I restart GDM, so I am afraid it has to be somehow GDM 
 related....
