>Description:
This has been happening since NetBSD 6.0 BETA 1 (or possibly earlier; i can't
remember) and pkgsrc-2011Q4 i believe. I thought it was one of those freak bugs
that would just be fixed quickly, but with packages built from pkgsrc-2012Q2
(including modular-xorg-server), it is still present. Basically, any screensaver
that has the visual set to GL will freeze after running for a short time (less
than a minute). This doesn't seem to happen with any other visual.
>How-To-Repeat:
Set Visual to GL in xscreensaver-demo or by editing whatever program's line in
.xscreensaver. Run it for a few seconds and experience the freeze.
>Fix:
I have no idea. There aren't any useful messages in Xorg.log nor in xdm.log.

What kind of video card, and do you have its drm driver enabled in the
kernel? (and if so, is it attaching?)

 Thanks.

I guess the other obvious question is: does it crash with all GL
visuals or only in the screensaver?

I didn't see the option in my xscreensaver-demo, but I did see a
"visualID: default" in my .xscreensaver. Should I put GL instead of
 default to try it?

I can however run gl-using xscreensaver modules fine,
i.e. /usr/pkg/libexec/xscreensaver/glhanoi, but I'm using an ATI GPU,
not an Intel one, and am using native-X11, not from pkgsrc
 (netbsd-6/amd64 using pkgsrc-2012Q1 packages I believe).

No, i can/could run ZSNES, NEStopia, and friends that use OpenGL. I just
locked it up again by running BouncingCows from the Preview mode in
 xscreensaver-demo. I had mouse, but no keyboard, so i couldn't ALT-TAB into a
terminal and kill it. Previously, i ran the same screensaver with TrueColor as
the visual and it didn't lock up. The strange thing is that the system seems
otherwise active. If i have a pkgsrc build running, it continues; it's just
 that the screen is frozen.

The Visual option can be changed in the Advanced tab of each program.

Yes, changing visualID: GL would work. Check the Advanced tab to see if it's
changed after restarting xscreensaver-demo. If that fails, each line after
"programs:" starts with a visualID. You can change any one of those to "GL" to
 test it.

Hmm. So it's not actually killing the system, just breaking the
 display?

Sounds like a drm-level issue; but I have no idea where to look :(

That's correct. The system is otherwise usable apart from the display. I may
try ssh'ing into it to see if i can kill xscreensaver, see if that yields
 anything, and report back.
