You should have mentioned that you use clang and not gcc.
This looks like a clang issue.

While the originator may indeed have a problem with Clang, it should be
noted that devel/gnustep-base does not build on *any* platform and
indeed is often the #1 source of break by causing 21 indirect failures.

Look at every recent bulk build -- devel/gnustep-base doesn't build
 anywhere.

Erm... it just built fine for me.

Also, the problem it had earlier this fall (after the libxml2 update)
wasn't the same as the problem in this PR.

 Hi,

this hapend on a fresh installed NetBSD 6 on i386 (sandpoint-port too)
with fresh fetched pkgsrc-current as I tried to build wwww/SOGo. The
gnustep-base package gave me the error describend in PR pkg/47259 and I
installed clang as a dependency... I still doesn't build...
I think if there is a clang problem others should reproduce this issue...

 Greetings,
 Helge

Yeah, my build installed clang too. It was, however, on NetBSD-current
 on amd64.

 I don't think it's you; it's probably either something about i386 or
 something about 6.0...

After you wrote gnustep is building, it's still failing on bulk build
reports, including this x86_64 NetBSD one from 9 Dec:
 http://mail-index.netbsd.org/pkgsrc-bulk/2012/12/09/msg009305.html

 That one used gcc.

I was serious when I said it said it was failing everywhere, I checked
several bulk reports. However, Joerg's last clang report from 8
 december doesn't show it failed:
 http://mail-index.netbsd.org/pkgsrc-bulk/2012/12/11/msg009306.html

I started a build at home yesterday, hopefully I will have a new report
 to check gnustep status soon.

 John

That's the same libxml2 problem that started earlier this fall, which
is not the problem in this PR.

Also, I used to get that problem in the environment that built it
 successfully the other day. I don't know what's changed, I haven't
been following pkgsrc-changes much the last couple months.

I know for a fact that gcc 4.7 objc can build gnustep v1.24.0 without
 any issue.

gnustep base requires clang, which as this PR show, can't even build
 gnustep-base on i386.

Can we consider reworking this package to suck in Clang only if it's
required? Unfortunately, a couple of gnustep mk files are hardcoded
 with clang.

At the very, very least, this i386 " undefined reference to
`__i686.get_pc_thunk.bx'" problem has to be fixed. It's been broken for
a few months now. Is anybody working on this regression?
