Did the install precisely as per instructions, and when booting into single user to configure the system it will not access the root & usr partition. If I try to force a kernel from the macos side all I get are vertical white bars of varying sizes.

I've also pulled the Daystar 040 and get the same results.

 Just to make sure I understand you correctly: you are able to boot the
 install kernel, but not any kernel from your hard disk after installation?

 Could you try to boot install again, go to a shell and check the output
 of "disklabel sd0" and maybe try to manually mount a partition from there?
