>Organization:
>Environment:
not available, dont have access on the system
>Description:
Netbooting netbsd macppc current (6.99.23)results in an unreadable console output. ssh access is not feasible. Console output is like: "blurred text -mixed pixels which they seem like words- scrolling upward to the screen". The output is unreadable.
I have also used kernel 6.99.15 -this one resides on the disk of the laptop and i copied it on the netboot server- but the console output on the laptop is the same when this kernel is used for netbooting.
Laptop is G4 aluminum case 1.33.

Netboot macppc using current kernel and userland (6.99.23)

What kind of graphics chip are you using? If it's a radeon you may want to try
 a kernel without radeonfb.

Yes it is a radeon chip (9600/9700) but building without radeonfb didnt resolve it, the behaviour is the same.

This is odd. Is the whole screen filled with scrolling garbage? Do the colours
look halfway right ( as in, greenish on white, later black on white )?
Also, what's in the radeon's OpenFirmware properties?
Finally, was radeonfb even built into the kernel you tried first?

This is odd and i might add "old" i had the same behavior when i first
purchased the powerbook but it was fixed, then i was booting from the local
 drive.
Yes the screen is full of scrolling garbage and the colors look halfway
right (greenish on white, later black on white).
 I netbooted using these configurations:
 i) 6.99.23 distribution (kernel plus userland, generic kernel -thus
 radeonfb is compiled in)
ii) 6.99.15 kernel and 6.99.23 userland. The kernel is the one i am using
to boot from the hard disk. When local booting everything is fine but not
when used for netboot. It has radeonfb support with extra info (debug plus
 additional pci info)
iii) 6.99.23 distribution (kernel plus userland) with radeonfb disabled as
 you requested.
All the configs had the same behavior.

 Openfirmware info.
 Commands used:
        dev screen
        .properties

 display type: 4c434400
 name: ATY, Jasper_a
 compatible: ATY, Jasper
 address: bc08000

there is plenty of hex output, let me know if you need anything more (if
the device i selected is the correct one).

This issue was resolved by defining RADEONFB_ALWAYS_ACCEL_PUTCHAR option
in kernel and is set by default in GENERIC kernel config in -HEAD. Note
this along with radeonfb were disabled in netbsd-8 as radeonfb causes
different issues with newer r9550 chipset graphics cards found in later
model system (specifically the last gen ibook g4s)

Does that mean the PR can be closed?

 In theory, yes.
Sevan sent me an iBook which reproduced this bug and I figured out
what's wrong - basically OF runs the radeon with tiling enabled which
radeonfb didn't expect. It only disabled tiling for the video output
logic and the blitter but not for video memory access via AGP, which is
why drawing characters by hardware worked while software drawing did
 not, which ALWAYS_ACCEL_PUTCHAR worked around.
I committed a proper fix a while ago - disable tiling translation for
video RAM access from the host as well - I do not remember if it was
pulled up into 9, I'll check.

 have fun
 Michael

Sounds more than in theory :-)

Given that the initial issue was filed against -current (and during
6.99) it doesn't probably really need to get into -9. So I'll close
 the PR.

(to the original submitter: if you would like it in -9 and it's not,
write in and let us know)
