Check config.log for the details, otherwise it is pretty useless.

Sorry, I looked in the wrong place and had the impression that config.log was useless. I now looked in the right place and got a deja-vu.
It's the improper quoting of POPPLER_VERSION in configure. I reported that, including a patch to fix it (remove the Backslashes), on tech-pkg in October 2013.
I think its clang-related, not OSX-related.
