>Release:        NetBSD 7.0_BETA
>Organization:
>Environment:
NetBSD-7.0_BETA/amd64 - 14 Oct 2014 source
>Description:

I upgraded a NetBSD 6 box to 7, and with a GENERIC kernel, no
screens are found and X doesn't start. With a DRMKMS kernel, and
UXA acceleration, X runs at 1024x768 resolution. SNA acceleration
is unhappy in a corrupt writing text on screen way, though the
screen is recognisable. With NetBSD 6, this setup ran at 1920x1080
with the attached xorg.conf.

Before the complications of X, the terminal screen is low resolution:

intelfb0: framebuffer at 0xffff800024b7c000, size 1024x768, depth 32, stride 4096

This is the same model of computer which I referred to in PR kern/49254 -
in that PR, I was running -current, and it is a different monitor.

The output which runs at the decent high resolution is VGA, which is why
the attached xorg.conf file is needed to ignore the low resolution LVDS.
No monitor is connected to the "LVDS" output (which has a DVI connector
on the box).

Truncated dmesg and full xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log follow:

 With recent -current/amd64 (as per 18 Nov current-users posting), this
 pineview based computer now panics on boot in:

 ffffff81342838
 curlwp 0xffffffff810d74a0 pid 0.1 lowest kstack 0xffffffff8133f2c0
 kernel: page fault trap, code=0
 Stopped in pid 0.1 (system) at netbsd:device_is_a+0x4: movq 20(%rdi),%rax

 device_is_a()
 intel_opregion_init()
 i915_driver_load()
 drm_dev_register()
 drm_pci_attach()
 i915drmkms_attach()
 config_attach_loc()
 pci_probe_device()
 pci_enumerate_bus()
 pcirescan()
 pciattach()
 config_attach_loc()
 mp_pci_scan()
 mainbus_attach()
 config_attach_loc()
 cpu_configure()
 main()

 The problem occurs in intel_didl_outputs, because
 drm_device dev -> pci_dev pdev -> acpi_devnode pd_ad is NULL

 This is because acpivga is not attached, because none of
 _DOS, _DOD, _ROM, _GPD, _SPD, _VPO
 are in the acpi tables, though it appears to have an

     Scope (_SB.PCI0)
     {
         Device (GFX0)
         {
             Name (_ADR, 0x00020000) // _ADR: Address
             OperationRegion (IGDM, SystemMemory, 0x7F5BE0F4, 0x2000)
             Field (IGDM, AnyAcc, NoLock, Preserve)
             {
                 SIGN,   128,
                 SIZE,   32,
                 OVER,   32,
                 SVER,   256,
 ...
 (I see GXFC GEFC SCIS GSSE SCIE GESF GBDA.* CLID IBTT IPSC IPAT IDVM IDVS PAVP
 none exhaustive list)

 Presumably, that's why we end up in intel_opregion_init.

 avoid NULL pointer dereference when acpivga isn't attached.
 ----------------------------

 fixed the panic.
 (This is an odd setup as GFX0 doesn't define the functions necessary for
 acpivga to attach.)

 The status now is that success in correct resolution detection seems to
 be dependent on the type of monitor, but playing spot the difference hasn't
 been very successful ("working" and "broken" monitors both have 1920x1080,
 and use the same connectors / setup) - the "working" one also happens to
 be a touch screen (iiyama Prolite T2250MTS) and is more recent than the
 "broken" one (what sort of "new" "monitor" protocols are there?)

 Given a "working" monitor, with SNA, X runs with the correct
 resolution, but most fonts (including xdm login screen) are corrupt.

         Option       "RENDER" "Disable"

 avoids the font corruption, so the box is now usable, though there are
 still artefacts, which look rather like http://gnats.netbsd.org/49547.
 (This is yesterday's -current/amd64)

 Disabling RENDER is no longer necessary!

 All artefacts have gone. benchmarks/glmark2 is happy (apart from "terrain",
 but it isn't obvious that that should work on a pineview)

 The only remaining issue involves the monitor with its duff EDID. Pre-drm2
 coped with it, and drm2 is happy with another monitor (so the work around
 is change hardware).

 (debug dmesg doesn't look different to the one above)

 FWIW, clicking on a firefox button caused:

 on said favorite pineview with a -current kernel from today - will
 try to get something more useful...

 The on-going

 I connected the "broken" monitor above, which is detected by the pineview
 as having a broken 0x00ffffff... EDID into a -current/amd64 Sandy Bridge
 laptop, and happily used it as a second high resolution screen.

 The Sandy Bridge managed to read its EDID successfully (including no
 mention of bit banging).

 I applied the following kludge:

 and said pineview now does 1366x768 pixels on the "broken" monitor, (without
 trying to disable the spurious LVDS1 connector)...

 Sounds like this all boils down to a gmbus problem...
