NetBSD 7.99.41 (GENERIC.201610301000Z) amd64
>Description:
nouveau is still not working for me on my laptop with a GTX 765m. The problem is still the same since 2015.
In the past, I had to enable nouveau in the kernel before to build it and the issues were :

1. It works, I have the screen displayed in 1920x1080. I set the xorg.conf to use nouveau but when I start X, it reboots my computer. To be able to see the error message, I SSHed and exported the DISPLAY variable to see if it tells me anything but no error message at all (I'll post the xorg.log).

2. The screen is black, not working, even if I connect another monitor to my laptop through VGA or HDMI. The NetBSD system can still be blindly used (or SSH on it, it works).

3. The screen is full of grey OR green (one or the other, it depends on NetBSD's mood), the system is freezed and my laptop fans are working more and more fast, doing a crazy noise (I don't know if it it is GPU or CPU fan by the way). I have to hard reboot the machine and NetBSD will make me a root file system check (not everytime, sometimes it seems that it freezes before to mount root).

Since then, the issues are still the same.

I'm using modular-xorg and vesa driver is working for me but offers me a 1024x768 max screen resolution.

For the moment, I created a new entry in my /boot.cfg to boot without nouveau and be able to use my computer with NetBSD

menu=Boot without nouveau:rndseed /var/db/entropy-file;userconf disable nouveau*;boot netbsd

Which is my default choice.

Here is my dmesg. I don't have any Xorg.log about the nouveau tests because it has no time to write it down on my system.

Does nouveaufb and the wsfb driver work?

This would at least give you the correct resolution.

 not sent to gnats

Ok so I tried with "wsfb" driver and it effectively works.
After that, I wanted to try "nouveau" driver disabling
acceleration with "NoAccel" "true" option in xorg.conf and it
 also worked for me.

Keep in mind that those tests are made when I am in the first
 case.

 >1. It works, I have the screen displayed in 1920x1080.

Cause if I have a black screen with the system running in
backgroud (case 2) or if the system is frozen with a grey or
 green screen (case 3), I won't work.

So, to have it functional, it may requires multiple reboot until
I am in case 1 to see NetBSD booting in 1920x1080.

 I tried with a freshly downloaded NetBSD-current the 26th December 2018.

BEFORE : The former behavior was like a five side dice. You throw it and you
obtain one of the following five behaviors :

 	1. The system boots correctly. The terminal resolution is automatically
set to 1920x1080 (my screen resolution). Everything seems to be working
until I try to start X where NetBSD simply crashes and reboot instantly
causing the root partition to be "dirty" and requiring a check at the
 	next boot.

 	2. The display turns black as soon as nouveau is supposed to be loaded
BUT the system is still correctly running in the back. I can connect to
my accounts and ask for a reboot writing "shutdown -r now" blindly. The
system correctly reboots. No file system problem.

 	3. The display turns BLACK as soon as nouveau is supposed to be loaded.
The system is frozen and the GPU's fan (or CPU's fan, I don't really
know) is turning faster and faster, up to its maximum speed. I have to
press and hold down the power button to stop the computer. The following
boot will require a file system check.

 	4. The display turns GREEN as soon as nouveau is supposed to be loaded.
The system is frozen and the GPU's fan (or CPU's fan, I don't really
know) is turning faster and faster, up to its maximum speed. I have to
press and hold down the power button to stop the computer. The following
boot will require a file system check.

 	5. The display turns GRAY as soon as nouveau is supposed to be loaded.
The system is frozen and the GPU's fan (or CPU's fan, I don't really
know) is turning faster and faster, up to its maximum speed. I have to
press and hold down the power button to stop the computer. The following
boot will require a file system check.

AFTER : There's only one behavior now. I took two pictures with my phone so you
can see by yourself what it does. The system boots correctly until it tries to
load nouveau. The system displays a lot of lines about nouveau (enough to fill
the screen as you will see on my first picture) and stop for maybe 20 or 30
seconds as-is. The first picture is showing what NetBSD is displaying without to
move for half a minute. After that, the screen turns black (second picture) and
the fan(s) are starting to turn faster and faster. Again, I have to stop the
laptop pressing and holding the power button and the following boot will require
a file system check. The system freezes. It means there is no log, no save of
what it does. /var/log/messages was an empty file after the first try (and first
 freeze) of NetBSD-current.

still a problem. the referenced pictures show nouveau running

"init running ..."
"init children ..."
"init completed in 138us"

a few times, then

nouveaufb0 at nouveau0

and the second picture is blank (off?) screen.

thanks for testing, Adrien!
