So you show us that the contents of the USB thingy are correct, but say
that the bios shows (instead) two options completely unrelated to the USB
stick - probably from your hard disk.
Are you sure your bios has boot from usb enabled? Or maybe the bios
does not recognize the usb stick?

On Linux, maybe "/dev/sdb1" won't work but "/dev/sdb" should.
(make sure "sdb" is actually your USB memory, by "sudo fdisk -l")
Some page says that "oflag=direct" is also recommended,
but I'm not sure if it's mandatory.

Tools like MediaWriter etc. might be easier to write image.

I had prepared a Fedora-25 USB boot stick (using the Fedora process) last
week.
I was able to boot it and install Fedora from that USB.
As a further test, I re-inserted the Fedora-25 USB boot stick.
The Dell bios recognizes it as an option, when setting the boot sequence.

Did you try that with the exact same usb hardware?
Just making sure, it really sounds like a local or Dell BIOS specific
problem to me, which will be hard to reproduce elsewhere.

NetBSD is on a PNY 64GB USB 3.0

Re-started the machine, Dell BIOS did not recognize NetBSD (on the USB) as
a boot option.

Re-started the machine. Dell BIOS did not recognize NetBSD (on the USB) as
a boot option.
My next step:
I'm going to try creating an install USB for FreeBSD.

Hmmm - could you try a NetBSD-8 beta image? One of the things that changes
is support for UEFI firmware (not sure what your Dell has).
Here is an example link (they are changing, try

OK .. this is what I have done so far.
I noticed that Fedora-25 was offering to upgrade itself to Fedora-26.
Rather than do that, I tried the USB-route with the same PNY 64-GB USB-3.0
that failed for NetBSD.
I used my Windows machine, to avoid the automatic upgrade on the Fedora-25
machine.
The website that I used is: https://getfedora.org/
I chose the Fedora workstation option.
The process loads a Fedora-media-writer app onto Windows, and then creates
the USB-install.
I shutdown the Fedora-25 box and restated with the new USB attached, and
went to Dell BIOS.
The USB was recognized as option. It was listed as:
UEFI: General. Partition 1
I was able to set this option as first in the boot sequence,
and successfully installed a fresh, complete copy of Fedora-26.
I have not yet tried the NetBSD-8 beta image.

It seems that the Dell BIOS is expecting UEFI.
There is an ability to pick "Legacy" mode ...
however, first you need to disable "Secure Boot" with multiple warnings
from the Dell BIOS.

Tried to use the "Legacy" mode on the Dell box.
It turns out that the "Legacy Option ROMs" need to be enabled for Legacy
boot mode.
Not clear how to do that. NetBSD-8 beta seems to be the better route.

OK ... we've established that the Dell uses only UEFI.
I've tried the 20170717 versions of both:
NetBSD-8.0_BETA-i386.iso
NetBSD-8.0_BETA-i386-install.img
I have re-formatted the USB prior to each attempt.
I have done each of
sudo dd if=NetBSD-8.0_BETA-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=32k
sudo dd if=NetBSD-8.0_BETA-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb1 bs=32k
sudo dd if=NetBSD-8.0_BETA-i386-install.img of=/dev/sdb bs=32k
sudo dd if=NetBSD-8.0_BETA-i386-install.img of=/dev/sdb1 bs=32k
The Dell setup does not recognize any of these as a valid UEFI boot option.
I does not seem to me that the UEFI option is working in NetBSD-8.0 beta.
Am I doing something wrong, or can you confirm that it is not yet working?

You want amd64, not i386. The only images suitable for dd'ing to USB
are the .img.gz ones, and the UEFI image is separate. Try this one:
