Just as I wanted to use this machine a little more, its SSD
starts failing with soft and unrecoverable errors under heavy IO.

No biggie, I order a new SSD. It has the exact same issue.
Wait a second, what are the odds of that?

Quick test confirms 8.1_RC1 works fine.

The problem shows up with NCQ merge (7-10-2017). If one stops the IO
generating process quick enough, the situation usually recovers, but
let it go for a second or so, it goes loopy and the machine needs
to be reset.

Below are two dmesg outputs:

99.4 from 16-10-2017 with errors (basically identical on 99.40)
This was the "first" commit post-merge that didn't hang.

99.3 dmesg is just before the NCQ merge and works fine.

 No idea why it should be related to NCQ, but CRC errors are usually
 related to cable/connector problems. Would also explain why changing
 the drive itself didn't help.

 This occured to me of course.  One of the first things I've tried was changing
 cables and port. That's why the boot disk is currently wd1 :)

 Not sure how this can *not* be related to the NCQ merge? I've literally
 tracked it down to that single commit with a whole series of kernels.

 It's not like this is a random failure that happens only some of the time.
 I can trigger it within 5 seconds, 100% of the time.

 Before NCQ is fine, after that it's always broken.

which adds a BADNCQ quirk for this controller, done on 2020-01-18 as part
of PR kern/54790 and PR kern/54855.
