To avoid it you can drop to boot prompt, type
 'userconf disable nouveau*
 boot'

Is there any information on the screen during the crash?
 What happens?

this chipset, and allow the system to work without accel gpu.

can you check? thanks!

I tried the 8.1 installation CD today, and when I booted from what the
BIOS(?) called legacy mode, I got through to the installer.

The installer seemed to work from that mode, but I was discouraged from
installing since there were kernel messages(?) or similar output which
is in the dmesg popping up while I was trying to install.

I want to be sure I choose the right installation options, and not
choose the whole disk for NetBSD.

When I tried booting in UEFI mode, the kernel got to nouveau and crashed
 again.

 Regards,

 Per Gunnarsson

By netbsd-8 image, mrg@ was wondering if one of the daily builds should
work. Alternatively, 8.2 should include those patches by now.

The daily builds are found at:

State-Changed-Why:
Feedback mail bounced, and realistically old versions of nouveau aren't
going to get fixed.

If you come back and see this, try -9 if possible, or even current (which
will be -10 in not very long) and if it still doesn't work let us know here
or file a new PR.
