>Description:
Old HP-UX used a file system called HFS LFN ("Hierarchical File System
with Long File Names"), which was in essence 4.2(?)BSD UFS with a different
magic number and 1k sector size. The patch below allows NetBSD (kernel,
dump, dumpfs and fsck_ffs) to work with a disk image taken from such a
disk.  The main changes are

  * Recognize the HP-UX magic number and infer that this is a UFS1
    with FS_42POSTBLFMT, a different DIRBLKSIZ and certain other quirks.
  * Use macros UFS_BTODB(ump, bytes) and UFS_DBTOB(ump, blocks)
    instead of btodb abd dbtob, to account for a different sector size.
    This does not represent any change for filesystems with the native
    sector size of 512. (In fsck_ffs(8) I used the names BTODB and DBTOB.)
  * Don't assume that the new superblock fields (fs_cstotal, fs_size,
    etc.) have valid data if we are using an old filesystem that doesn't
    have them.
  * Switch the sense of tests for magic == FS_UFS1_MAGIC to use
    magic != FS_UFS2_MAGIC instead, since the HP magic number is different.
    (I hope that no one will make a UFS2 variant with a different magic
    number, but if that happens we can deal with it then.)

If there are no objections I'll commit this in the next week or two.

>How-To-Repeat:
Try to mount or work with an old HP disk (or disk image) on NetBSD:

 Just a side note and nothing blocking a commit: there are a few other
 places in the tree that check for superblock magic values (I know about
 scan_ffs and sysinst, maybe there are more) - it may be a good idea to
 update those as well.

 The original BSD code used definitions like these above as a 'disk offset'
 referred to physical block numbers. This is still used that way in
 userland.

 NetBSD disk drivers always use logical block numbers for a block size
 of 512 bytes (DEV_BSIZE) and filesystems ignore the superblock values when
 translating between filesystem block numbers and disk block numbers.

 For FFS the macros FFS_FSBTODB / FFS_DBTOFSB are used to do this conversion.
 They are differently defined for kernel and userland to address the different
 views.

 btodb / dbtob are originally MD macros (then unified) that always used
 a platform specific unit, i.e. DEV_BSIZE, to specify disk offsets. This
 unit is independent of a particular filesystem and the physical blocks of
 a specific device.

 Now what unit does di_blocks use, it's only used for reporting and quota
 calculations ? The original code used btodb(file_length), i.e. the values
 used the platform-wide DEV_BSIZE as a unit and that's what we still use
 today.

 Your patch changes that and di_blocks is now using the physical block
 size of the particular disk (recorded in the superblock) as the unit.
 Apparently that's what HP-UX is doing.

 I see two issues: you added another view on disk offsets and you break
 existing filesystems that use a physical sector size != 512.

 Apparently we need conditional code to handle di_blocks for the
 different systems.

 Do we have a way to construct a file system that works with NetBSD,
 which has a physical sector size other than DEV_BSIZE?  If so, I can
 test against it.

 Note too that the macros in question exist only within the scope of the
 fsck_ffs utility.  The other userland programs that I adapted didn't
 need them, and the kernel uses macros that depend on struct ump and
 could easily be special-cased for HP-UX or other old file systems if
 need be.  Come to think of it, in fsck_ffs we could just do something like

      exter daddr_t dev_bshift;

      daddr_t dev_bshift = DEV_BSHIFT;

      #define BTODB(size) ((size) >> dev_bshift)
      #define DBTOB(size) ((size) << dev_bshift)

 and change the value of dev_bsize, if necessary, in the setup.  The
 kernel would do the same, but storing the dev_bshift value in struct
 ump.  Would this address your concern?

 Thanks,

 -Konrad

 You can use newfs -S to configure the superblock value.

 You can also use vnd with a "geomspec" to create a virtual disk that
 really reports a different physical block size. newfs will automatically
 determine the block size.

 I wouldn't call it dev_bshift to avoid confusion with DEV_BSHIFT and
 also would use functions to compute the di_blocks value.

 But I'm also not sure if HP-UX really uses the physical sector size
 as unit for di_blocks.

 Can you verify that it's not the fragment size ? That would be
 the most natural value and, by default, is 1024 for HP-UX. On
 the other hand, I haven't seen any HP-UX system that would
 use 1024 byte physical sectors.
