Encountered when doing a new install on a blank drive where I choose to set partition sizes in the NetBSD 9.0 installer. Changed the /tmp partition size from 25% to 8192 MB. The next screen with the partition layout and the subsequent newfs omitted the /tmp partition completely.

Change /tmp partition from default 25% to a manually entered size value.

I meant to add that the ram-based tmpfs should only be the default with a
percentage value, or there should be an indication that a separate
partition will not be created when inputting a size.

 Thanks,

 Dan

Yes, that is kinda on-purpose. The next screens show the partitions on
one special drive (like wd0) and /tmp will be only a mountput, but not
 eat space from that disk.

So did the install end up with tmpfs and the size you chose mounted as
 tmpfs on /tmp ?

Yes, I did get tmpfs with the correct size in /etc/fstab and the
installer says (tmpfs) in parentheses next to the /tmp mountpoint, so
 that behavior was logical.

At first glance, I was surprised because experience differed from
 previous installers.

The real issue in terms of functionality is that there's no way to add
another user-defined partition as /tmp even if you enter a size of 0
on the /tmp (tmpfs) line in the partitioning screen.

I tend to prefer to set a separate /tmp partition to avoid sacrificing
memory or risking the off-chance of a runaway item or process in /tmp
filling up the root (especially in systems with limited resources).

 Thanks,

 Dan

 Just wanted to explain:

On release 8 you could set /tmp (tmpfs) to 0 and add a true partition
size with /tmp as the mountpoint.

On 9.0 that behavior changed where setting /tmp (tmpfs) to 0 and
trying to add /tmp as a user defined partition resulted in an error
saying that /tmp was already defined.

Under those conditions giving an option to create a partition when
changing from a percentage to a size on the tmpfs line would be
 helpful.

Sorry if this was unclear in my prior message.

 Sincerely,

 Dan

Oh, I see the problem - indeed that was not intended.

Internally all is handled correctly, but you have no option at the
first size menu to select a different (non-tmpfs) file system type. If
you could do that, the later installation process would deal with it.
For all other partitions (that are not just mountpoints) you can edit
 details at the next menu.
