Appears to be that multiboot support was handled not very carefully over the past few years.

8.0's bootloader can multiboot 9.0 netbsd-GENERIC, but not when it comes to 9.0's bootloader itself. Unlike 8.0's bootloader, 9.0's spurts an "Unknown error: code 0" when trying to boot:

> multiboot netbsd
netbsd is not a multiboot kernel
multiboot: hd0a:netbsd: Unknown error: code 0

In the meantime, I'll be downgrading to 8.0's bootloader...

> multiboot netbsd (netbsd-GENERIC!)
