>Description:
When attempting to install NetBSD 9.0 on a DEC alpha 3000/400S the installer loops when attempting to partition the drive. I've searched the mailing lists and found that this is a somewhat known problem? Someone suggested using NetBSD 8.2 and then doing an upgrade to 9.0. I've tried this but have problems when tar is extracting the sets...I get an unexpected EOF error on the base and comp sets. I've been using the CD iso to start the install and then using the network to get the sets.

Use the NetBSD 9.0 installer on a DEC Alpha system.

Please try a 9.0_STABLE installer from

 Martin,
I've given the installer image you linked try and it still appears that tar=
exits with an unexpected end of file at 28%
on the base set. I tried to download the sets via ftp as well as via the RR=
D43 (a bit suspicious of the drive but it seems reliable).
I believe the hardware to be fine as 8.2 has no issues with installation or=
  function.

 Aaron

But that is a totally different issue, isn't it?

Sysinst now works, but tar is broken (at least in the crunched build on the
 installl images)?

I can not easily help with the tar thing currently - is anyone else able to
 look into this?

So I decided to try my hand at using sysupgrade and can confirm that it mus=
t be an issue with the version of tar thats included in the installer. Sysu=
pgrade worked successfully although incredibly slowly (64megs of ram will d=
o that) which proves there's no issue with my machine or the binaries on th=
e server. My 8.2 system is now a (oddly) much faster 9.0 system. If there a=
re any data points needed to help with this I'd be glad to assist, although=
  I'm relatively new to NetBSD.
