The last few lines displayed during booting are (bar typos):

the machine (an oldish HP Pavilion laptop) becomes completely non-responsive and only holding down the power switch has any effect that I can establish.

I will got the same effect trying to install NetBSD 9.0, so I thought I'd try a later version. I will now try the i386 version, in case the behaviour is different.

For the record, I installed Debian Buster 10.05.0-amd64 on the same hardware. It wasn't totally warning free, but no show stopping errors occurred.

I guess it is platform dependent, I may be able to assist with debugging, if such an option is practical. I used to strip the generic kernel for my purposes, but my job has robbed me of the choice to use NetBSD instead of Linux.

 i386 is not likely to be different. -current might be (but it's only
 worth trying if it's fairly easy to do so, the chances aren't that
 good)

 Otherwise maybe check to see if the vendor has a BIOS update;
 sometimes that turns out to do the trick.

 Beyond that I have no particular ideas, but someone else might.
 (Though since nobody else has responded in six months perhaps not...)
