at various times including building emacs and emacs 27 tar segfaults doing the .elc files. It has also died on me using other earlier versions of Netbsd, 9, 9.1, 9.2. I'm used to moving and copying directories using cpio and tar and was surprised a number of times by the segfault.

>How-To-Repeat:
well, atm i'd try building emacs or emacs27 in pkgsrc2021Q1 but i think any large tar will blow up.
>Fix:
none known atm, i did a work around using cp -R but that is not a fix.

This would be the base libarchive-as-tar, right? It appears to be,=20
well, not always good enough. Try with a=20

 USETOOLS+=3D gtar

 maybe?

Well, I renamed /bin/tar and did a symlink to gtar. Lynx installed, emacs
no, emacs27 in progress now. Seems to maybe a tar workaround. Never did
find the makefile definition so did a brute force symlink redefinition.

May not be a tar bug at all. Can you see if yours is a duplicate
of any of these 2 PRs which have been fixed in the newer -HEADs?

#56080: tar(1) dumps core on nfs volume
#56083: tar -c hangs when reading from FUSE-ext2 filesystems

 I used

 EXTRACT_USING=  gtar

 in editors/xemacs-packages.

 Do you have a backtrace?

Do you have any locale settings in your environment? (LANG, LC_*)
