System: NetBSD smistad.uninett.no 10.0_BETA NetBSD 10.0_BETA (GENERIC) #0: Fri Aug 18 12:52:31 UTC 2023 mkrepro@mkrepro.NetBSD.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC amd64
Architecture: x86_64
Machine: amd64
>Description:
Booting this PC (HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF) which has an i7-4790
CPU and uses the built-in graphics hardware gives one of two
	results:

	1) with the VGA screen as console, the two screens I have
connected both go blank and enter "energy save mode" before
	   the boot completes

	2) with a serial console, the boot succeeds, and I get a login
prompt on both screens, and X11 can be started the usual
way after login (I'm old-fashioned and use startx).

Incidently, this was the state of NetBSD 10.0_BETA as of Thu
Jan 12, but it remains as current behaviour with this recent
NetBSD 10.0_BETA from Fri Aug 18.

Given that the screen goes blank, it's a little hard to tell
if the kernel has crashed or whether this only affects the
screen output (although I could perhaps wait to see if the
	network is configured...).

>How-To-Repeat:
Try to boot recent 10.0_BETA on similar hardware, watch it
fail if VGA is the console.

>Fix:
Boot using serial console appears to be a workaround in this
case, but there must be lots of systems around where that is
at best a cumbersome or worst impossible workaround.

dmesg from this system follows below. This is with just the
kernel upgraded (so possibly somewhat dated graphics
firmware?), I will shortly also upgrade user-land.

Subject: Re: bin/57591: i915 graphics console goes blank during boot
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2023 19:32:51 +0200 (CEST)

 Hi,

short update, on hint from martin@, I tried booting with
console=VGA and turning off the two flat panel screens connected
to my PC just after pressing enter to the "boot netbsd.new"
command in the boot loader CLI.

I also waited long enough that the PC would normally have come up
and configured the network, and it did not become reachable, so
this is a fairly strong indication that the kernel has crashed.

Annoyingly, this doesn't reproduce when I boot the same kernel
with console=serial, and since the screen goes blank it's really
difficult to provide any more precise error message.

 Regards,

 - Havard
