This only seems to happen if the machine is booted from local disk. Netbooting with root on nfs doesn't seem to hang on audio but that has other problems.

 AFAIK the drive is PIO only, so it's easy to get audio problems.

 Does it work if you copy the wav file to tmpfs first ?
 If yes, does it still work if you read from disk with dd in parallel ?

 Of course, it shouldn't lock up at all. Can you enter ddb in that case?
