Further information...The machine that crashes/burns is an 8200 called
'mother.nas.nasa.gov'. A similar machine, 'jules.nas.nasa.gov' has different
behaviours. The relevant f/w level and memory sizes are:

Mother:
AlphaServer 8400 1-5/300, Console V5.2-7 5-JUN-1998 16:57:28, SROM V3.1
128MB memory
One processor.

Jules:
AlphaServer 8200 Console V4.8-6, 12-FEB-1997 16:31:47, SROM V3.1
2GB memory
Two processors.

Both machines function relatively flawlessly under 1.3.
