 Just to mention it:
 Such an upgrade would also fix any problems with handling files >2GB, as
 was noted by the GNU Tar maintainers (see mail below). The problem is also
 described in PR 9248.

 Thanks for your bug report. The problem described should be fixed
 since tar-1.13 which is available at any ftp.gnu.org mirror site.

 We have fixed many bugs since tar-1.13 and I think you should consider
 using the tar-1.13.17 which is available at alpha.gnu.org/gnu/tar.

 We're currently working on getting tar-1.14 out. Please don't forget
 to upgrade to this stable version as soon as it is available.

That bug was fixed in -current at 2000/01/05. The fix was pull upped to 
1.4.2_ALPHA at 2000/01/08.
