NetBSD/i386 1.6
>Description:
Cannot mount a CD during installation.
The following console messages appear:

pciide0:1:0: lost interrupt
        type: atapi tc_bcount: 0 tc_skip: 0
(repeats five times)

The IDE controller is recognised at boot time as:

pciide0 at pci0 dev 17 function 1: VIA Technologies VT8233A ATA133 controller
pciide0: bus-master DMA support present
pciide0: primary channel configure to compatibility mode
pciide0: primary channel interrupting at irq 14
pciide0: secondary channel configured to compatability mode

The machine is a PC clone with an Asus A7V333 motherboard and
on-board IDE controller and Sony CD-ROM drive. This hardware works
under Loonix.

Try to mount a CD.

Is the CD using DMA? If so, try waiting until pciide downgrades it to
PIO mode. AFAIK linux doesn't even try to use DMA by default (but I may
 be wrong here).

If I wait, the operation times out and the mount fails. There is no
evidence that pciide downgrades it to PIO mode.

I did manage to get NetBSD installed using an older CD-ROM drive, but
the installation still doesn't work without a kernel recompile (I
changed the flags in the kernel conf, as Steve Woodford suggested).

Hi,
can you please try NetBSD 1.6.1 ?
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.6.1/
There has been several fixes to VIA support since 1.6

The problem persists in NetBSD 1.6.2, which I presume contains the
patch release to the offending driver?

Sorry for not reporting this sooner :-(

Closing this PR elicited feedback from the submitter,
and he reports that the problem persists in 1.6.2, thus
we re-open this PR and hope we can get it fixed before
NetBSD 2.0 ships.

I am no longer running NetBSD on the hardware concerned, so I have no
way of verifying this bug now. Please feel free to close this PR.

Well, "may be fixed". I think it might be better to leave this one
open (or marked "stuck", when we can do that) in case someone else
comes along with the same HW.

(Unless you know more about it than I do, which is I suppose fairly likely.)

Do we have a global policy about this ? I'd prefer to have a PR re-opened
by someone who see the issue on the same hardware, than leaving it
in non-closed state and have this someone say "there's already a PR about
it, no need to report my problem".

 >
 > (Unless you know more about it than I do, which is I suppose fairly likely.)

there have been work done in this area, but as there are several variants
of this hardware I can't be 100% sure.

Not really, but realistically closed PRs are not reopened except by
people who already know about them. A different person who comes along
with the same problem won't look for a match among issues that are
supposedly already fixed... even if they search the database at all.

That's true. But the existence of this discussion in the PR itself
 should prevent that. :-)

(The reason I've been arguing for a "stuck" state is to make this
clear, though. There are quite a few PRs in this situation.)
