The NetBSD sysinst starts correctly, after sets have been chosen the disklabel menu appears, upon selecting "Set Sizes of NetBSD partitions" the below message appears:

Screen too narrow (70 + 2 > 66) for menu "Untitled"

sysinst terminated.

Standard display, 15" tft connected.

This message means that sysinst has tried to create a menu that is
bigger than your screen. This menu is created dynamically, from the
current partition info. Could you show the output of "disklabel" on
 your machine?

 Thanks,

 Martin

Another point: it seems you are using the on-board graphics, and I
suppose you left the TERM type at the default "sun" - I wonder what
text resolution you end up with (and why it is so small)

The error message also says that the screen size is 66 columns wide.
sysinst does rather expect 80 colums and 24 lines.

Something unusual must be going on with the console font - which probably
 makes this a sparc bug.

IIRC there is another PR of a similar nature.

Could you try a -current or 4.0 beta snashot from the daily build area on
ftp.netbsd.org? These are wscons based and do not use the prom font.

 Some thoughts...
The sparc prom will expect a screen resolution of 1152x864 (just under
1M pixels with a same aspect ratio) - which is what sun frame buffers
almost always were (going back to the sun3 even).

Your 15" LCD monitor is probably 1024x768, the font that gives 80 columns
with 1152 pixels gives fewer columns with only 1024 pixels....

 Thanks for all the feedback!

 Just checked out
 ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-4/200612050000Z/sparc64 and
 it's empty?

Also, the screen is defo 66 colums wide and 27 high, which is a little
weird, the system has openboot 3.31. I have a massive 17" crt sitting in the
next room i could lug through to try if that would help?

 Cheers,

 kyu

This problem is still present with the 4.0 sysinst installer, I just
ran into it. (For anyone else who's run into this, I also found an IRC
transcript that details someone else's attempts to work around the
 issue: http://ircarc.com/freenode-netbsd/364.html .)

Another user later reported this occurred on macppc with NetBSD 5.0 as
well[1]. Perhaps this is duplicable on any architecture where the
console font is sufficiently large and the screen size sufficiently
small? (Of course, the commonality is all reports involve machines
using OpenFirmware.) I mention this because there was discussion here
about it being a "Sparc bug", it's evidently more prevalent. (I no
longer have the Ultra 5 and the CRT I used to duplicate this with
 back in the 4.0 era.)
