>Description:
Many man pages that should be available on amd64 are missing. Among others:
console.4 fdc.4 intro.4 lpt.4 mem.4 pcibios.4 mbr.8 pxeboot.8 etc.
In fact, there is no src/share/man/man4/man4.amd64 directory and
src/share/man/man8/man8.amd64 is empty. Most of the missing man pages could
probably be copied across from i386 (with minor modifications).

Responsible-Changed-From-To: misc-bug-people->port-amd64-maintainer
Responsible-Changed-By: fair@netbsd.org
Responsible-Changed-When: Tue, 17 Jul 2007 07:33:38 +0000
Responsible-Changed-Why:
This problem report is being moved from category "misc" to
category "port-amd64" since the man pages being reported as
missing are all port-specific, and the portmaster (or his
designee) should resolve this PR.

Subject: Re: port-amd64/36350 (Many man pages missing on amd64)
Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2007 22:06:07 +1000
I have already discussed the below patches with Christos via PM. He
asked me to send them here so that other people have a chance to review
and comment on them.
The basic idea is to create a new category "x86" for those man pages that
would be practically identical on amd64 and i386. Man pages common to
these two machine types could then be added to man4.x86/ and man8.x86/
directories and could be used to build man pages for both amd64 and i386
by setting MANSUBDIR as follows:
MANSUBDIR= /amd64
MANSUBDIR+=/i386
bsd.man.mk does _not_ support this at the moment, but a few simple
changes could add this functionality. This would make man pages (which
are currently missing) available on amd64 while preventing a duplication
of files.
Any comments?
Cheers,
Joerg
PS: The intro.4 patch contains a major update for that man page.

We have the same problem for sparc64, sparc and sun* - and untill now
the standard procedure used to be to move man pages up, so they are
available on all archs.
The amount of affected man pages was smaller though ;-)

We have man4.x86 now.
But how many of the existing i386 manual pages are really applicable to
AMD64? Is something like pnpbios(4) even present in AMD64? Is it really
worth the trouble to move manual pages of legacy devices such as fdc(4) to
man4.x86? (Also: why is something like fdc(4) even in AMD64/GENERIC?)
If someone could look at ../share/man/man4/man4.i386 and decide what needs
to be moved, I will do it and get this PR closed.

there are amd64 machines with floppy controllers, and even some with
actual drives attached that worked. i'ver seen them.

Subject: Re: port-amd64/36350: Many man pages missing on amd64
Date: Sat, 22 May 2021 03:17:33 +0000
We have man4/x86 now, but the following pages from man4/i386 should
probably be there and not in i386:
autoconf.4
cons.4
console.4
and maybe also pcibios.4 and cmos.4? Not sure.
There is also no amd64/intro.4, but the i386 intro.4 contains a lot of
stuff that doesn't apply to amd64 so it's not so obvious what to do
about that.
I think all the other ones cited have been dealt with.

State-Changed-When: Sat, 10 Jul 2021 05:27:23 +0000
State-Changed-Why:
Everything mentioned here except intro.4 and pcibios.4 (pcibios is referenced
by amd64 configs but cmos isn't, so cmos.4 isn't relevant) is fixed, but it
turns out there's another PR for these.
So, close this one in favor of 51748.
