>Description:
Boot error message "mount: /tmp: Segmentation fault" on a fresh NetBSD 4.0_RC3 install. Disklabel created the disk label during a standard install, all partitions also were created without errors. NetBSD 4.0_RC3 installs without errors but it cannot mount /tmp. Same partitions used here work OK in 3.0 and 3.1 stable releases.

Just do a fresh install of NetBSD 4.0_RC3 and create a /tmp partition among your regular partitions. You will get a boot error message:
mount: /tmp: Segmentation fault

I am using a 3Ware card configured in RAID1 fwiw. I tested the same install, on the same system using the same values with 3.0 and 3.1 without problems.

 Can you please do it manually and ktruss/ktrace the mount command?

 please use ktrace -i.

 Can you also provide your /etc/fstab, please?

 I can't recall if I mentioned this before but I tested switching for tmpfs=

 and it worked ok. Could be this a problem with the raid controller card?

 8193150 * 512 = 4194892800 = 0xfa08fc00 is a rather large mfs

 Here mmap() fails. Now look at src/sbin/newfs/mkfs.c and see code like this:

 	calc_memfree();
 	if (fssize * sectorsize > memleft)
 		fssize = memleft / sectorsize;
 	if ((membase = mkfs_malloc(fssize * sectorsize)) == 0)
 		exit(12);

 where

 	static void *
 	mkfs_malloc(size_t size)
 		...
 		return (mmap(0, size, ...

 Looks like all tests of mmap() against NULL need conversion to MAP_FAILED.

 Yes I know and reducing its size makes is a work around:
 mount_mfs -s 2048000 /dev/ld0b /tmp

 However in older releases (at least tested in 2.1, 3.0 and, 3.1) the=20
 behavior seems to be a quiet mount of whatever max allocation of memory
 is. =20

 Did this fix make it into release 4.0? =20

 I tried 4-current and 4.0-release, both still have the same problem.

      Hmm, I thought it did, but apparently not. It is netbsd-4 pullup
 number 1024.

 } I tried 4-current and 4.0-release, both still have the same problem.

      You can fix it yourself by unpacking the src.tgz and

 cd /usr/src/sbin/newfs
 cvs up -kk -j 1.103 -j 1.104 mkfs.c
 cvs up -kk -j 1.14 -j 1.15 mount_mfs.c
 make USETOOLS=never all install

 Thanks. I patched a fresh install 4.0 release and the mount command if
 manually executed worked ok however after reboot the mfs /tmp created
 is not being mounted and silently ignored.
