>Description:
I have installed (several times) NetBSD 3.1.1 and 4.0_RC5 on two SunBlade 100 machines. They have 14.5GB disks that I am partitioning as
13.5GB -> / (FFSv1)
1GB -> swap
The file system keeps getting corrupted time after time. Usually, errors already appear while installing. I can reinstall the failed sets an get the machines working, but there are files with their content corrupted and other filesystem errors.
Besides that, the machines seems quite stable and I have been able to use several applications without any problem, so it doesn't look like caused by a defective RAM or other hardware problem, and I have tested it in two different machines with the same result.
I was able to run FreeBSD 6.2 on these machines also without problems

"sysinst" takes care of that, doesn't it?
I only have to specify the partition
sizes and it arranges them on the disk. BTW, I have partitioned the
disk so
that all the space is used, it says "0 blocks free" (or something
alike).
Anyway, one of the times, libXpm.so.4.11 (I am writing from memory)
became corrupted, and looking at the file, I saw that the ELF header was
corrupted at the byte level, instead of the tree "ELF" bytes it had
something like "OLF". I think that this could only be caused by defective
hardware (HD or controler) or a bug on the DMA/IO layer.
Broken RAM could be also the cause but besides the FS corruption, the
machines were completely stable what makes it unlikely and as I tried
NetBSD on two (identical) machines with the same result, and FreeBSD
worked there, I would discard any hardware problem as the cause of the
corruption.
Next Monday I would try to get the dmesg output and make some more test
using "dd"
Cheers,
- Salva

IIRC there were some isssues with this ide controller - Manuel investigated
a workaround found in OpenSolaris, but maybe it does not work for you.
Marnuel, I forgot the details - could you have look at this?
Thanks,
Martin

The workaround is still there, and the revisions matches.
Salvador, ca you apply the attached patch and see if the printf() fires up
at boot ?
thanks

I have recompiled the kernel disabling ultra dma 4:
wd* at atabus? drive ? flags 0x0aac
and everything worked, so it seems that the problem lays there.
Actually, on the config file it says:
"Disable UDMA 4 which causes data corruption on the Acer Labs chipset on Sun Blade 100 and Netra X1 machines"
Cheers,

Yes, but the workaround Manuel pointed at should avoid this corruption
(which is why we have udma enabled by default again) - so, could you please
check the printf Manuel suggested?
Thanks,
Martin

Looks very similar to mine, exept I have a Ultra/33 drive, not ultra/66 ...

Yes, but this should have been fixed between netbsd-3 and netbsd-4;
the workaround being to disable/enable the channel after a reset.

I forgot to tell, I had already patched the kernel source and
aceride0:0: acer_do_reset
appears on the log, so the work-around is active.
