(That's with a 4.0 userland...also tried a 4.0 stable kernel with same results on the SATA problem)
>Description:
NetBSD only sees one SATA channel out of four. The BIOS sees the two hard drives plugged into two of the four hardware interfaces.
Further information that might be helpful:
FreeBSD (7.0--live CD) sees both drives (the two drives plugged into two of the four SATA interfaces on the motherboard).

FreeBSD dmesg

>How-To-Repeat:
Try to boot NetBSD with SATA drive(s) plugged into any of the last three interfaces on an Abit AN52 motherboard with nvidia nf520 single chip. NetBSD can only see a drive on the first interface.
>Fix:
See the message posted by Jonathan Kollasch for a possible solution.

Possibly, duplicate of 38011 - does the patch therein help?

For the record, it appears that it isn't and it doesn't, respectively;
I have a machine with the same viaide (nForce MCP65) and I've finally
had some time to tinker with it, without result.

The solution to this problem (and also the interrupt routing/ACPI
problems I've been having with the same viaide) is to run it in AHCI
mode. Setting it in the BIOS and including ahcisata(4) in the kernel
JFW.
(Well, except that it has the problem where occasionally one of the
disks probes as a few kilobytes long, but I think that's a known issue
with ahcisata.)
I have my doubts as to whether MCP65 (and later, too) will ever work
properly except as AHCI; the Linux and FreeBSD drivers both probe it
and immediately enable AHCI mode. I suspect, for people who don't have
a BIOS setting, that we ought to teach ahcisata_pci.c to do that, and
take the PCI ids out of viaide.c so we don't try to run it as viaide.

State-Changed-When: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 06:42:10 +0000
State-Changed-Why:
This should be fixed in current and 5.0; the controller should attach as
ahcisata rather than viaide regardless of BIOS setting.
Does it?

Here's the dmesg after an update to 5.0_RC2 (from 4.0), a reboot
with the Generic kernel only (no new userland, yet) and the
relevant parts shown. The second drive does not have a NetBSD
disklabel on it for now. I'll trim the kernel config, do some
probing, sort some of the mess out and get back to you.

It appears that it does! See wd1, below. The following resulted after
I commented the "viaide*" line out in the GENERIC kernel
configuration file and recompiled. The rest of the configuration file is
original as issued. I might try a fresh amd64 install and update to
5.0RC2 (amd64) with that now, to see if it works. ;-)

Maybe it doesn't after all. I'm sorry about the premature
announcement. It appears that it's attaching as pciide, although it
is seeing both drives (one on the first interface and the other on
the third). I'll make a 5.0RC2, i386 install disk with a GENERIC
kernel and try that as soon as possible.

Just another data point: I'm running with the patch^Whack below "for ages"
on my Sun Ultra 40's. That's nforce4 resp nforcePro2000, but the symptoms
had been the same...

Those are different hw though and it's a different problem.

The IDE drivers are machine-independent, yes.
I think I see what the problem likely is: there are four PCI IDs for
the MCP65 SATA controller, and only one of them is listed in
ahcisata_pci.c.
Try the following patch (with GENERIC):

If that doesn't work, what we'll need to know is what the PCI ID you
actually have is, which you can get via lspci or equivalent.

I don't think adjustkernel is expected to work on any currently
supported versions.

It appears to have made a positive difference! See the kernel messages
below for the new bus and drive information.
The patch did not apply, maybe because I didn't update 5-0-RC2, yet.
I added the new ("+") lines from the diff to the ahci.sata_pci.c file
with vi. ...will do the update and make sure that the dmesg file is
the same after sending this reply. Here's the resulting dmesg file
after cleaning the src tree, manually inserting your additions to the
source file and recompiling. Is it what we'd hoped to see? If not,
I'll show more info after the update.

I guess so. Looking at it, I would have thought the patch would
probably apply anyway, but it's not a big deal.

Thanks to you, David, and to all for the great work! That's it,
then. There are no drive read or write errors here, even after
another kernel build. The second drive (first interface on the
second bus) also mounts fine.
The patch problem was probably my error. I'll find more documentation
and read it.

Hey, this is great! I have a HP Pavilion 9700 laptop which
has exactly this MCP65 controller and two internal disks.
With this diff, netbsd finds the second disk and is usable
for me, too.
Now, I also have a wd0 and wd1.

Committed By: dholland

Modified Files:
src/sys/dev/pci: ahcisata_pci.c
Log Message:
Add the other three PCI ids for the nvidia MCP65 SATA controller to
the quirk table. This way they attach as ahcisata and work, instead of
attaching as viaide and failing miserably.
Fixes PR kern/37826.

XXX: should probably be added also, but I don't want to do that without

Subject: PR/37826 CVS commit: [netbsd-5] src/sys/dev/pci
Date: Mon, 30 Mar 2009 16:49:26 +0000
Module Name: src
Committed By: snj
Date: Mon Mar 30 16:49:26 UTC 2009
Modified Files:
src/sys/dev/pci [netbsd-5]: ahcisata_pci.c
Log Message:
Pull up following revision(s) (requested by dholland in ticket #616):
sys/dev/pci/ahcisata_pci.c: revision 1.14
Add the other three PCI ids for the nvidia MCP65 SATA controller to
the quirk table. This way they attach as ahcisata and work, instead of
attaching as viaide and failing miserably.
Fixes PR kern/37826.
XXX: There are a bunch of additional MCP67 and MCP73 PCI ids that
XXX: should probably be added also, but I don't want to do that without
XXX: further investigation and testing.
