NetBSD vincent.local 4.99.62 NetBSD 4.99.62 (DELL) #37: Tue May 6 10:26:46 CEST 2008 email@example.com:/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/compile/DELL i386
On my DELL Inspiron 530 machine, bundled with a Core 2 Duo CPU,
cpu0: "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz",
the second core will not come ready. The kernel crashes a while after because it doesn't expect this behavior.
FreeBSD 7.0 and Linux/Ubuntu happily boot both the second CPU with no problem, so it does not seem to be a BIOS issue.
Change BIOS setting to disable MP or boot a UP kernel. This is no fix but a ugly workaround.

if you still have this hardware, can you try a newer kernel, like
5.1_RC3 or even NetBSD-current?
