>Description:
The machfb is broken in the macppc port. You have to disable it before you can boot into NetBSD.You will get a garbled up screen if you don't. This has only been tested on an Apple Imac G3 333mhz version.
>How-To-Repeat:
Try to boot netbsd without disabling machfb.
>Fix:
Boot into open firmware and add the -c to the boot command like this:
boot cd:,ofwboot.xcf hd:3,/netbsd -c
type disable machfb
then type quit. Then the system should boot up, but with no framebuffer.

That means it has trouble with whatever graphics chip the 333MHz iMac
G3 uses, not macppc in general.

Works fine here.
Since you didn't provide any useful detail I can't tell you what's
going on.
To figure out what's wrong we need:
- ofctl -p output
- dmesg output

Ok, so it's a Rage Pro, apparently with a VRAM expansion. That setup
should just work.
What exactly do you mean by 'messed up screen'? Does it switch to some
video mode the monitor doesn't display properly or does it just draw
garbage?
I suspect it's a messed up video mode, iMac built-in CRTs are weird
and need special treatment.

Once the machfb starts by the kernel, almost all of the screen turns
black except for a small portion in the top left corner. There I can
see stuff move around when I type in commands and stuff. None of it is
legible. This is my first attempt with NetBSD and its on an iMac G3
266mhz Rev C model. I'm also not too experienced with Macs. I'm at a
loss.

This is weird.
I tested machfb on a rev. A iMac where it worked fine ( that's a Rage
II but I also tested it on a Rage Pro on sparc64 ) and numerous other
machines with different mach64 chips. I've never seen anything
remotely like what you describe. Any chance to try a 5.0 beta CD?

Same behavior on the PowerBook G3 Lombard, disabling machfb clears up
console corruption & allows X to start.
