 Did you try disabling the azalia driver ?
 You could also try entering ddb (strl-alt-esc or +++++ depending on
 console type).

 Ah yes, I forgot to mention that.  I did try disabling the azalia  
 driver, but the hang just comes a bit later, after probing wd0.

 I can't break into DDB from my USB keyboard.  In a few days I should  
 be able to get a serial console going on that machine.
