To rule one out: can you adjust the brightness if you enable the wmihp(4)
driver? I.e.
wmihp* at acpiwmibus? # HP WMI mappings
This is commented out by default on GENERIC kernels. Be sure to comment out
the alternative in turn:
#hpqlb* at acpi? # HP Quick Launch Buttons
Otherwise we'll revisit this once the code for ACPI display devices has been
merged (hopefully soon).

Hi, I just added wmihp* at acpiwmibus? in the kernel config (in
current hpqlb is uncommented) and it results in a panic :
Because I can't save the backtrace can I attach a picture take from a
digital camera ? (480K)

Oh. That was unexpected.

I am not sure if that is possible.... If you have any place to put the
picture, an URL link is fine. If you have another machine, it is also fine
to copy the backtrace by hand.

Tested, it does not panic anymore but it doesn't print any output and
does not adjust brightness. I guess this laptop is impossible to
maintain.

Well this is sort-of expected as we do not yet have a driver for ACPI
display devices.
But if you have time and interest, boot with "-v" and "-x" (see
boothowto(9)), press various hot and function keys, and if any output
appears in dmesg, write the mappings down with a paper and pencil. That is,
most of the hotkeys for wmihp(4) are still unknown, and this so-called "WMI"
is pretty much undocumented, non-standardized, black magic.
Some functionality may appear also in the envstat(8) output.

I know nothing about the innards but I'd guess that the list of
mappings jruoho@ wanted would still be helpful.
