>Description:
On a PowerMac Digital Audio 733 using either a Geforce 2MX or a Geforce Ti4600 connected to a CRT monitor (an IBM C220p) either via HD15 or by a DVI to HD15 converter, when the kernel is booted via ofwboot.xcf it switches the display into a 40 column mode.

This is insufficiently wide to run sysinst, so a menu driven installation is not possible.

The default width/height reported for the Geforce2 MX in Open Firmware properties is 640x480. I do not know if this can be fixed as my attempts to modify it via nvram/nvedit have so far failed.

Latest firmware is in use.
>How-To-Repeat:
Run install on an Open Firmware 3 system. Possibly limited to only Geforce cards on a Digital Audio.
>Fix:
Connect the DVI output of Geforce Ti4600 to a TFT monitor. The screen still changes resolution from the bootup resolution to a much lower one, but the width is sufficient to use sysinst.

Let me guess, the video card comes up in 640x480 when entering OF?

OF is coming up in 640x480 according to the .properties of dev screen, yes.

The problem is not 640x480 as such, but the size of the fonts used. OF
uses a very small font which is substantially over 80 columns. A few
moments into the kernel boot a much larger font is used that doesn't
 fit in 80 columns.

That's what I meant to imply, sorry if it wasn't clear.
I'll have a look, the INSTALL kernel is supposed to contain an 8x16 =20
font for just this case and use the bigger font only if it can still =20
 get at least 80 columns.

If it helps, it's clear that the powermac isn't keen on my CRT
monitors, despite trying on both a Geforce 2 and a Geforce Ti 4600 and
 in OS X/9.

The Geforce 2 starts in 640x480 but can be modified to use a higher
resolution in OS X/9. The Ti4600 doesn't like the CRT monitors at all
(TFT via DVI-D is ok). Despite the fact the monitors are capable of
2048x1536, it's refusing to budge off 640x480. Other computers are
perfectly fine, so the mac is obviously being a bit special..
