>Description:
Due to some changes in the startup order of the rc-files
ntpdate will be started prior named and will fail to solve
names from ntp.conf.
>How-To-Repeat:
insert an external symbolic server name into ntp.conf and you
will see that ntpdate is not able to solve it.
>Fix:
I'm not realy shure how to fix it.
The problem is the dependeny in "kdc" on "ntpdate".
Only "racoon" depends on "kdc" and nothing depends on "racoon" at the
moment and "racoon" also coms in front of "SERVERS".
But at the moment only "named" depend on the "SERVERS" target.
Now I do not know if named will ever realy depend on "kdc" or "racoon".
Of cause "named" may depend on some other things that come in front of
"SERVERS".
I suggest that replacing the BEFORE: "SERVERS" in "kdc" and "racoon"
with BEFORE: "rpcbind" will solve the problem - but I do not use kdc
and/or racoon at the moment ....
Perhaps another virtual target should be added in front of "rpcbind"
- that is the only thing that depends on "named" ...

Hi again,
I've forgotten to add the main change required to get named started in
front of ntpdate to this report - sorry
here it is:
add "named" to the REQUIRED set in /etc/rc.d/ntpdate
add "ntpd" to the BEFORE set (new) in /etc/rc.d/ntpdate
The first on forces named to be started in front of ntpdate.
The second one is just for security.
At the moment, there is no dependency that ntpdate is started in before
ntpd is started, but there should be one - either in /etc/rc.d/ntpdate
as mentioned here, of as REQUIRE in /etc/rc.d/ntpd.
Best regards

Isn't ntpdate about to disapear which only leaves ntpd?

Hi,
I don't think so, because ntpd requires the local time setting of the
system near by the time from the time-references servers. Otherwise it
simply refuses to work.
So it is required - at least in the current version of ntpd - to set the
time to a value near by at least on time-reference server prior starting
ntpd.
This is done by ntpdate and ntpdate "normaly" extracts the set of
relevant servers from ntp.conf.
For external servers it is no good idea to use ip-addresses there, so
named is required prior starting ntpdate.
As long as the ntpd in the ntpd-version off the NetBSD-distribution does
not do the work of ntpdate during startup by itself, ntpdate is required.
And at least in the case of a broadcast or multicast client I see a
problem for ntpd to do it without additional information, that currently
cannot be extracted from the ntp.conf file.
Best regards

=46rom my experience, ntpdate also has been very useful on systems where
running ntpd is not wanted but a local ntp server already exists on the
network...

State-Changed-Why:
This was fixed by perry@ in src/etc/rc.d/ntpdate 1.19
(and the order wrt ntpd he fixed in 1.20), all in 2012.
Ten years later and nothing more has happened, NetBSD 5
is long dead, this one can go bye bye...
