In order for HD Audio HDMI to function properly, the display driver needs to enable the device's audio engine and update the device's HDMI audio parameters as needed. Until then, these devices won't work:

  hdaudio1 at pci2 dev 0 function 1: HD Audio Controller
  hdaudio1: interrupting at ioapic0 pin 17
  hdafg1 at hdaudio1: ATI R6xx HDMI
  hdafg1: HDMI00 2ch: Digital Out [Jack]
  hdafg1: 2ch/0ch 32000Hz 44100Hz 48000Hz 16/16
  audio1 at hdafg1: half duplex, playback
