I'm trying to use this as a router/access point, so it needs to stay up without dropping connections. I'd be happy to try any patches for this if it'll help.

This may not be what you want to hear, but for atheros you may want to
try using a -current kernel. Get (or build) MONOLITHIC so you don't
have to tangle with modules, and then you don't have to update
 userland.

Userland is still 5.1-release but the kernel is now:

 NetBSD 5.99.53 (MONOLITHIC-GW) #0: Fri Jun 24 10:25:02 CDT 2011

[which is MONOLITHIC with 'options GATEWAY' added, built from -current
 as of 6/23 ~1600 CDT]
 and I'm still seeing:

 Jun 24 15:30:11 allin1 /netbsd: ath0: device timeout (txq 1, txintrperiod 5)
 Jun 24 15:30:28 allin1 /netbsd: ath0: device timeout (txq 1, txintrperiod 4)
 Jun 24 15:30:38 allin1 /netbsd: ath0: device timeout (txq 1, txintrperiod 3)
 Jun 24 15:31:07 allin1 /netbsd: ath0: device timeout (txq 1, txintrperiod 2)
 Jun 24 15:36:35 allin1 /netbsd: ath0: device timeout (txq 8, txintrperiod 1)
 Jun 24 15:42:54 allin1 /netbsd: ath0: device timeout (txq 8, txintrperiod 1)

sigh... so much for hoping it'd already been fixed. Unfortunately, I
don't actually know anything about this driver myself...
