>Description:
In testing the upcoming 6.0 release I realized that NetBSD cannot boot my box anylonger. Upon
boot prompt, it immediately reboots after a short pause after only displaying the first line
of the numbers (that it read from disk, I assume). I had NEtBSD 6.0 installed along with its
modules (a GENERIC kernel), built from source on February 18th. The box in question is a
Thinkpad T61. I attach the dmesg of the box from 5.1_STABLE:

Mysterious "instant reboots" are also reported in e.g. PR kern/45851.

How did you update? Basically the main question is: did the mbr code
get updated? The primary boot code, and/or /boot?

 No, no, no.

I just copied the compiled kernel to / and its modules to /stand/i386/6.0.
The mbr code and all the rest is from netbsd-5 times. I don't see anything
in UPDATING signaling the necessity of updating the boot code though.

Oh, great - so we can rule out the boot code (which the other PR mentioned
 is about).

How far do you get? No copyright banner at all? Does it display cpu type
and/or memory info before it reboots?

Nothing. Just the first line that indicates how much it read (or its checksum
or whateverdoIknow), the line that the boot loader displays (I presume).

I remember having to update the boot code when starting to track
-current from a netbsd-5 system... perhaps that UPDATING is missing an
entry and that the boot code really should be updated? Just a guess...

I don't think so: the reporter of #45851 mentions this panic happening with
 the installation media.

I don't think so. My main dev box's /boot is from 2007... there was a
bootloader update but it involved the loading of modules, failure of
which should at worst leave you with "cannot mount root".

More info: I successfully booted with a NetBSD 6.0/amd64 kernel off the
netbsd-6 branch of the same source date as the N6/i386 one that's failing.
I did not (have to) update the boot code to boot this kernel successfully.

I booted with "-vx" as arguments. Here's the dmesg of that successful
boot (maybe it helps shed some light?)

For the record; still an issue with netbsd-6 sources from 2012-03-28.

I _believe_ now that this is due to a dying HD.

I need to test 6.0 BETA on this box from a CD and get back to you on
 that theory.

(what makes me believe that now all of a sudden? My previously working
system stopped working without me doing anything. Copying the working
kernel onto different blocks and booting that 'ressurrected' the system.)

 Some more data points:

 1) a netbsd-6 i386 kernel from friday's sources still instantly reboots
the box after displaying the numbers (stuff read) before the copy right
message appears. I.e., state remains broken.

 2) booting from CDROM doesn't make a difference. Still instant reboot.

 3) a netbsd-6 amd64 kernel from friday's sources boots fine.

Ergo: I will change this box to become an amd64 installation, and no
longer be affected by this bug. If you make changes that you guess
might influence this behaviour, let me know. I'm willing to give i386
some more tries (well, at least booting. I'm not going to install back
 to i386 once I've transitioned to amd64).

 Regards,
 -Martin

This is likely the same as 46885 and therefore probably fixed on HEAD
(with pullup to -6 on the way) -- please give it a try when time
 permits.
