>Description:
I try to install NetBSD 6.0 BETA using the ISO downloaded from nyftp 26-03-12 but sysinst halts at root:

When I boot from the DVD drive I can see that cd0a is initially found and my hardware is then listed - mainboard, video, USB, audio, network, hard disks, etc.

Somewhere along the way cd0a gets lost, because when this root: prompt comes up and I input ? to list possible candidates for root I am not presented with cd0a as a possible candidate. All I get is age0, wd0[a-p], wd1[a-p], wd2[a-p], fd0.

This DVD drive works with other operating systems and with an earlier stable release of NetBSD (5.1 amd64).

The DVD drive is the only device attached to the onboard IDE channel. It is jumpered as master. The onboard IDE controller is a Marvell 88SE6111 controller.

I also have a PCI adapter which gives me a spare IDE channel, but removing this adapter does not solve my problem.

The hard disk drives are all attached to SATA ports.

I also have a SCSI adapter which at the moment is disconnected from my tape drive. Removing this does not solve my problem either.

The only way I can install NetBSD 6.0 BETA is by using an external USB DVD drive.

I also tried an i386 -current ISO, NetBSD 6.99.4, which gives me the same problem.

This controller does not show up (unless I overlooked it) - if it is
easy, would you be able to also provide the NetBSD 5.1 dmesg? You said
it worked with that, so it should be listed there.

Manuel, could you have a look at this?

 Thanks,

 Martin

Oh, I overlooked a possibility: it could be that the DVD drive did not show
up on NetBSD 5.1 either - but it was not needed there, due to the memdisk
 based installer root filesystem.

Do you remember if you ever used the cd/dvd device there? Anyway, a dmesg
 would be helpfull.

I installed NetBSD amd64 5.1.2 tonight and I have some files for you.

First of all - some content I neglected to include in the bug report:

 NetBSD netbsd.abalta.dnsalias.net 5.1.2 NetBSD 5.1.2 (GENERIC) #0: Thu
 Feb 2 12:12:28 UTC 2012
 builds@b7.netbsd.org:/home/builds/ab/netbsd-5-1-2-RELEASE/amd64/201202021012Z-obj/home/builds/ab/netbsd-5-1-2-RELEASE/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC
 amd64

Now the contents of dmesg 1 and 2.

I think the first dmesg is the install dmesg - I can see that root is
on md0a, which presumably is the memdisk based installer you mention.

But cd0 does show up in this dmesg, and in the second dmesg, which is
the dmesg I got after rebooting.

I can mount cd0a at /mnt and list the contents of the mount.

Under 6.0_BETA the controller where the cd0 drive is attached is
 driven by ahcisata(4), under 5.1.2 it's driven by pciide(4).
Can you confirm that this is a SATA DVD drive and not PATA ?

if yes, please #define AHCI_DEBUG and set ahcidebug_mask to 0xff in
sys/dev/ic/ahcisata_core.c and send me the resulting dmesg.

Thank you. It is a PATA drive Manuel.

OK, so replacing pciide with ahcisata is wrong, as this will hide the
PATA channel. Something like jmide(4) is needed, which can drive both
the PATA channels and the ahci(4) part. I will need to find more infos
 about this controller ...
