>Description:
init dies when booting a Sun Fire V240 with the NetBSD 6.0_BETA2 boot ISO
burnt on CD-ROM.

Contrary to what the error message suggests, a media error can be ruled out
as the same error happens when booting from an other CD. It rather appears
to be a problem with aceride.

Here's the boot log:

 Did you try another CD *drive* ?
 I think it's unlikely a IDE issue: the kernel is getting sensible errors
 from the drive, which means it can send a REQUEST_SENSE command and
 get result back. Communications with the drive is working.

 I have similar hardware,

 cd0 at atapibus0 drive 0: <DV-28E-B, , 1.2B> cdrom removable
 cd0: drive supports PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2, Ultra-DMA mode 2 (Ultra/33)
 cd0(aceride0:0:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 2 (Ultra/33) (using DMA)

 and it fails just the same. You are right, aceride seems to work fine, but
 could it be an incompatibility of that ipscsci/atpai layer with this
 particular cd drive?

 I have a known working slim drive lying around, will see if I can replace
 it for testing. Will also try cd_disect from the misc/udfclient
 pkg on the drive.

 I check with cd_disect and there is nothing special (I could tell) about the
 drive. However, if I do:

 # dd if=/dev/rcd0c of=/dev/null bs=2k

 with a known-working amd64 -current install CD/R in the drive I get:

 dd: /dev/rcd0c: Input/output error
 254+0 records in
 254+0 records out
 520192 bytes transferred in 17.883 secs (29088 bytes/sec)

 and the kernel logs:

 cd0(aceride0:0:0):  Check Condition on CDB: 0x28 00 00 00 00 fe 00 00 01 00
     SENSE KEY:  Hardware Error
      ASC/ASCQ: Logical Unit Communication CRC Error

 Is that a bad cable or a (silicon) bug in aceride?

 The CD drive is assumed good (it used to boot a Solaris/OpenSolaris CD-R just
 fine; but I'll re-check if it still does).

 I don't currently have a replacement drive available, unfortunately.

 Here is a hack from OpenSolaris for this machine:

 oooh i love the use of magic in here :-)

 eg:

     130         val = pci_config_get8(isa_handle, 0x58);

     145                         pci_config_put8(isa_handle, 0x58, val & 0xFB);
     146                         drv_usecwait(1000);
     147                         pci_config_put8(isa_handle, 0x58, val);

 etc...  this chipset is gross.

 We should already have this, see aceride.c revision 1.16

 Yes, but the reset bug workaround is only installed if the Acer Labs M5229
 UDMA IDE Controller has rev == 0xC3. The machine in question has rev = 0xC4.

 It should be easy to see if enabling the workaround for 0xc4 has any effect.

 Enabling the existing workaround for rev. 0xC4 unfortunately does not fix
 the problem for me.

 Just for the record, on a different machine with...

 aceride0 at pci2 dev 13 function 0: Acer Labs M5229 UDMA IDE Controller (rev. 0xc4)
 aceride0: bus-master DMA support present
 aceride0: using PIO transfers above 137GB as workaround for 48bit DMA access bug, expect reduced performance
 aceride0: primary channel configured to native-PCI mode
 aceride0: using ivec 1f98 for native-PCI interrupt
 atabus0 at aceride0 channel 0
 aceride0: secondary channel configured to native-PCI mode
 atabus1 at aceride0 channel 1
 [..]
 atapibus0 at atabus1: 2 targets
 cd0 at atapibus0 drive 0: <JLMS XJ-HD166S, , D3S4> cdrom removable
 cd0: drive supports PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2, Ultra-DMA mode 2 (Ultra/33)
 cd0(aceride0:1:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 2 (Ultra/33) (using DMA)

 ... everything works fine.

 Some more testing with other CD media shows that my drive in the v210 is
 picky, but basically working. I just doesn't seem to like a lot of CD/R.
