>Release: NetBSD 6.0_BETA2
>Organization:
	NetBSD
>Environment:
Dell Optiplex 755 and Dell Optiplex 990
System: NetBSD 6.0_BETA2 NetBSD 6.0_BETA2 (GENERIC) i386
Architecture: i386
Machine: i386
>Description:

Boot on i386 install CD causes a hang when the CD can not be mounted
as root. It appears to allow one to continue by typing in the cd0d
but there is no console input working. It is totally hung. This
happens on both a Dell Optiplex 755 and Dell Optiplex 990. The
amd64 version boots sucessfully on both machines. The following is
the dmesg from the amd64 since I was not abe to collect the i386
version.

I experienced a similar problem a few years ago with an old Compaq
Proliant. The problem turned out to be that the install kernel
autoconfigured cd0 to a UDMA mode which the drive (or possibly the
internal ribbon cable) didn't actually support. Looking at your dmesg,
the same thing may be happening. I got round the problem by building a
custom install cd (or possibly floppies) with an install kernel which
had the DMA modes restricted. e.g.

cd* at atapibus? drive ? flags 0x0fac # PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2,
 disable UDMA

 or possibly

cd* at atapibus? drive ? flags 0x0ffc # PIO mode 4, disable DMA,
 disable UDMA

Or you could try replacing the internal ribbon cable with an Ultra/100
cable - I think the problem arises because Windoze doesn't enable UDMA
 modes on cdroms by default.

I can confirm the same (i386 install cd hangs, amd64 ok) for Optiplex
 755, Optiplex 760, Optiplex 780 and Optiplex 990. i386 install cd
works for Optiplex 620 and Optiplex 745.

Interestingly while most 760's fail, while I was testing just now I
found 1 760 that worked with i386 install cd. Looking to see what was
different about this machine -- at one point it ran windows xp so its
bios sata operation setting had been changed from the default AHCI to
ATA. Setting it back to AHCI gets the hang. I haven't tried the same
 test on the other machines.

 cheers

Just a shot in the blue:
I have a similar Dell machine, where we fail to fire up the second cpu.
I think there was a warning message in the dmesg (later) somewhere, but
if you don't look closely it scrolls by way too fast.

I never fully analyzed the failure, but somehow the secondary cpu crashed
early, before making it into the idle loop. Additionally it could be
considered a bug that this state confuses our internal state so much that
 the kernel is completely useless.

Can you try to boot the i386 cd, interrupt the cd bootloaders timer and
 do:

    boot -1

to boot with only one cpu attached?

 Thanks,

 Martin

I've lost track of where this is at. Christos commited that work
around in 1.43 then backed it out in 1.44. I don't know if there is
some alternative fix in HEAD that is waiting on testing before pullup
 to 6 - I haven't tried a HEAD install cd.

I can confirm both the originally-reported problem (i386 cd boot fails,
amd64 cd boot succeeds) on my newly-built system with a Gigabyte
GA-H67-USB3-B3 motherboard, and the workaround: if I switch the SATA
controller to IDE mode from AHCI in the BIOS, it boots OK under i386.

When it hangs, it then panics somewhere in USB as soon as I hit a key on
 the USB keyboard.

Let's have someone try that hack and see if it works.

It was backed out without confirmation.

There are more than one problems that prevent "root on cd0" working
 http://mail-index.netbsd.org/source-changes-d/2012/07/14/msg005045.html
and only one problem (kernel didn't recognize cd0 as a booted device
on some BIOS) was fixed, but no further progress due to no feedback.

I guess the real problem is around AHCI driver (probably timing issue),
but I'm afraid no one is working on it.

This workaround does, in fact, make i386 boot for me while my SATA
controller is in AHCI mode. My opinion is that it should be committed
on the branch as a patch (so that a real fix can be made on the trunk),
and netbsd-6 RC1 released. Can anyone else try? My .iso that I tested
 is here:

 http://www.tastylime.net/netbsd/NetBSD-i386-69910-patch.iso

...if anyone else wants to test. It's -current plus the patch in that
 email.

I am not too happy about not understanding why this makes booting work,
but I guess this is an acceptable fix for now. The other item we need
to decide about is if we should pull openssl too. I've seen the trap.c
fixes for sparc64 and powerpc pulled up alredy.

The patch works around in case scan_iso_vrs() in
sys/kern/subr_disk_mbr.c fails to check iso9660 mark in
 "if (a->lp->d_flags & D_SCSI_MMC) {}" block because
 is_udf is always set there.
(though I don't know what the function actually tries)

I can confirm that this iso works for an Optiplex 780 in AHCI mode,
 haven't tried the other Optiplex's.

 cheers

There are at least three machines this workaround helps,
 so I've sent a pullup request as [pullup-6 #482].
