I use xfce (installed from pkgsrc) started from xdm via xfce4-session
in my ~/.xsession. Whenever I log in, the console is spammed with a
bunch of messages like this:

Feb 9 13:21:19 night-owl pulseaudio[759]: [(null)] module-hal-detect.c: Unable to contact DBUS system bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory
Feb 9 13:21:19 night-owl pulseaudio[759]: [(null)] module.c: Failed to load module "module-hal-detect" (argument: ""): initialization failed.
Feb 9 13:21:19 night-owl pulseaudio[759]: [(null)] main.c: Module load failed.
Feb 9 13:21:19 night-owl pulseaudio[759]: [(null)] main.c: Failed to initialize daemon.

Besides fixing that, it might be good to have an option to completely remove
sound support from xfce.

 Hi Jeremy,

To be honest, I'm not running xfce anymore and I'd like to be unlisted
as maintainer. I thought Guillaume and Reinoud, who were packaging xfce
4.8, would have taken over by now, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

(Also, because I'm listed as maintainer in Makefile.common, it's
inherited by all xfce plugins, most of which I never even used.)

I don't think anything in xfce (or at least the version in pkgsrc) uses
pulseaudio? I can't even find an xfce4-pulseaudio package in pkgsrc (or
with google even). No idea what causes pulse to start on Martins
computer, I don't think it ever did for me with xfce.

 > Any thoughts on this?

I think I had the same errors when I first used pulseaudio. I commented
out hal-related parts in my ~/.pulse/default.pa. IIRC, I had to comment
some other stuff too, before it wanted to run. I wondered whether
everyone had to do this... Are you running pulse and did it work out of
 the box for you?

 kind regards
 dieter

 I found the knob:

XFCE -> Settings -> Session and Startup

On the "Application Autostart" tab there is "PulseAudio Sound System"
 check box.

I have unchecked it now - which is good enough for me. This seems to be
 new with 4.8.

I disagree - for me it looks like the pkg defaults are wrong.

Pulseaudio is enabled by default in xfce (which might be subject to
discussion and personal taste) and it is pure luck that for my usage
unchecking the config option is "good enough" (to make the annyoing
 error messages go away).

However, the pulsaudio pkg should install to a usable state or give a
hint what configuration is needed via a MESSAGE file.

If you think this all works and I have some local configuration issue
preventing it working for me, could you please give me a hint where to
start looking? I do not remember touching any related configuration, just
installed the pkgs and found it not working.

Your reported log said that dbus and/or hal are not available.
Startup those daemons, or disable pulseaudio support.

Duh - and the dbus pkg even told me to do so.

 Thanks!
