>Description:
Installing NetBSD from CD on a single hard disk (160GB SATA) works OK - partitioned disk, installed packages, rebooted and it worked fine.

I then booted from the NetBSD CD to install again, but this time used the same disk partition settings I had previously set up, installed packages, rebooted and received the error NetBSD MBR, No Operating System.

I repeated the same process, this time slightly adjusting the size of one of the partitions and it worked fine.

It seems like reinstalling the system using previously defined disk partition settings causes an error.

Here is the partition info I used:

NetBSD# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail %Cap Mounted on
/dev/wd0a 16G 63M 15G 0% /
/dev/wd0f 66G 66M 63G 0% /var
/dev/wd0e 38G 945M 35G 2% /usr
/dev/wd0g 16G 16M 15G 0% /home
tmpfs 2.0G 4.0K 2.0G 0% /tmp
kernfs 1.0K 1.0K 0B 100% /kern
ptyfs 1.0K 1.0K 0B 100% /dev/pts
procfs 4.0K 4.0K 0B 100% /proc

Adjusting the size of one of the partitions for a reinstall works around the problem.

what exactly did you do and what did you not do?
Did you reinstall the NetBSD boot blocks? And did you recreate the
 filesystems on the partitions?

 Hi,

I'm new to NetBSD so please forgive my lack of proficiency. On all
 occasions I selected the following:

 - Install NetBSD to hard disk
 - Use wd0
 - Custom installation (Kernel + Base + System + Compiler Tools)
 - Use entire disk

 - On the first attempt (which worked fine) I partitioned the disk and
accepted the default file system formatting, I selected "Use BIOS
 console" and Installed from CD
 - On the second attempt I did the same, but the default disk formatting
that automatically came up on the menu was what as I had previously
partitioned it to be on the last install, so I accepted it. I selected
"Use BIOS console" again. After I rebooted the machine it gave the
aforementioned error about not finding an OS.
 - On the third attempt I did exactly the same as the second attempt but
instead of accepting the disk layout I increased the size of one of the
partitions slightly and selected "Use BIOS console", rebooted and it worked.

From a beginner's perspective the 2nd attempt "should" have worked, but
perhaps something needed to be done that wasn't obvious to me. I'm not
sure if the file system was reinstalled on the 2nd attempt, I'm afraid
I'm guilty of hammering the "OK" button and getting on with something else.

 Thanks,
 Chris
